On a bright September morning in 1975 I attended my first class at chiropractic college, CMCC in Toronto, one of a little over 200 kids. It was pretty scary, I was in a new city, didn’t know anyone and was about to start out on a career that would shape and define my life.
By the time the Christmas break rolled around, our class had shrunk down to 150 kids. One quarter, 25% of the starting class had dropped out! And that’s what I’d like to write about today.
Look at any child, how curious they are, how full of life and adventure they seem to be, trying to take charge of their world. And then, along the way, many become passive, they give up trying to be in control and settle for survival, taking a passive role in life. And as adults, how many people who feel that they are at the bottom of the totem pole accept their reality as their fate?
Whether it is at home or at the office, many people seem to be in a state of frustrated acceptance of their situation. They have given up trying to be all they can be. An uncle of mine, long since past away, spent his entire career in the post office telling everyone how he hated his job, his supervisors, and on and on. But wait until I retire, he would say, then I’ll have my pension. As I said, he has long since past away. His pension is gone and his legacy is what?? That he toughed out his job that he detested to get a great pension?
It makes you wonder, doesn’t it? What do you think?
Searching for meaning is part of who every person is. It is in our genes and is what makes civilization move forward. If you are feeling that there should be more in your life, check this out as this is an opportunity to help yourself get unstuck, to get out of your rut.
As for that 25% of my freshman class, makes me wonder where they ended up, if they couldn’t even stick it out for 3 months.
