Watching the disaster unfold in the Gulf of Mexico, I can’t help but see the similarities in how we treat our planet and how we treat ourselves. Bottom line is that we all know drilling for oil in the deepest of oceans would eventually lead to another ecological disaster. Maybe we thought it would happen in the Arctic where no one lives, at least that way it wouldn’t really affect us. And so we kept on drilling ever more inaccessible and precarious holes in the ocean floor looking for another 6 months of oil for the world’s automobiles.
I have seen people who totally ignore their health until the heart attack hits. If it doesn’t kill them (up to 40% of all first time heart attacks are fatal) suddenly they are ready to clean up their diet, maybe even try a little exercise. And then we try to move heaven and hell to save the person from themselves. “Spare no expense” is the call, after all we have the technology to help restore their health. And sometimes they actually do change their lives, but only sometimes.
There is also another wake up call that I see quite often. Some call it a midlife crises, where one suddenly wakes up to what they are or are not doing with their lives. Sometimes it takes something like getting cancer, or losing a loved one to make you re-think your life. Read Bernie Siegel’s books such as Love, Medicine and Miracles to discover the link between cancer and a unhappy life. But wouldn’t it be great if we would stop and look at what we are doing in our world every now and then. Check this out, go through the 7 exercises and then ask yourself, am I content with what I am doing with my life? I hope you are, and if you aren’t, what are you going to do about it?
