Healthy Hobbies

Posted by: Marcelle

A hobby is a break for the mind, an interest where your talents go out in all directions. So how about you make it a healthy direction?

What’s a healthy hobby? Well, first there’s the obvious: exercise. That means you could be into swimming, weight training, dancing, Qi Gong, yoga, pilates, kick boxing, martial arts, skiing, skating and many, many other activities.

But there’s other healthy hobbies too.  Have you ever considered:

. . . trying to become a healthy cook?

Take your cooking skills to the next level by learning more about vegetable centered and low cholesterol meals.  There are loads of tasty recipes out there. Go online to the food network or your local bookstore’s cooking section and be inspired.

. . . keeping a journal?

The reflective mind is an active mind. Self examination is a really effective way of recognizing patterns that either work or don’t work in your life.  Not only is this useful for self-reflection, but it’s the type of expression that also relieves stress and let’s your issues shout themselves into resolutions.

. . . playing Sudoku or the weekly crossword puzzle?

A sharp mind needs exercise like any other muscle in your body. The saying, ‘either use it or lose it’, has a lot of worth. Keep your cognition in top shape and practise weekly with a game of Sudoku.

. . . going fishing?

It’s good for the body to be in the fresh air, and it’s good for the soul to sit on some quiet water and wait for a bite. I love fishing; it’s a pastime that not only takes you to the prettiest, most peaceful spots along the shore, but also offers fast action moments of excitement.

. . . joining a book club?

Reading’s good for you, like vegetables, but what I really have in mind is the social benefit of a book club. Of course, this expands into all sorts of clubs: tea and coffee clubs, men’s groups, women’s societies, hobby enthusiasts, bowling clubs  – the list goes on. It’s uplifting to gather with friends. Social health is something that can too easily be neglected, but is absolutely worth your time.

Do you have any more idea for healthy hobbies? We’re interested in hearing about the less-obvious activities and why you find them so nourishing.
